From Oregon Double Duck to Cal Bear

August 15, 2019

Following a nationwide search, the Staff Ombuds Office is delighted to announce the selection of Rachel Nicholson as Assistant Ombudsperson for the Staff Ombuds Office.

Rachel comes to Berkeley as a “double duck,” having earned both her Bachelor’s degree and Master’s degree at the University of Oregon.  Rachel holds a Master of Science in Conflict and Dispute Resolution from University of Oregon, School of Law where she completed her thesis Working Within the System:Understanding How Policies, Structures, and Culture Influence the Operations of the University Ombuds.  Prior to coming to the Berkeley Staff Ombuds Office, Rachel worked as a Case Assistant at the University of Oregon Ombuds Program.  She holds a certificate in mediation and also has served as a volunteer mediator for smalls claims court in Lane County, Oregon.

In her new role, Rachel is the first point of contact for employees who need assistance in answering questions about ombuds services, conducting intake, providing conflict coaching, making referrals, and scheduling appointments.  “I am overjoyed to join the vibrant UC Berkeley community,” said Rachel. “I hope to create a welcoming and positive experience for those calling and visiting the office in their time of need.”

If you would like to learn more about what an “ombuds” is or would like to know more about our services, Rachel is happy to talk with you and is also interested in connecting with the campus community.  She can be reached at 642-7823.
