While working remotely, Berkeley employees face a number of challenges.  The Staff Ombuds Office continues to serve staff to find problem-solving strategies during these unprecedented times.  In the month of March, the Staff Ombuds Office had 55 confidential appointments and continues to provide ombuds services by phone to support staff.

Cal Coaching Network (CCN) is a new campus staff organization.  Last month, it held its kickoff event “Building UC Berkeley’s Coaching Culture.” Over 75 staff members came together to brainstorm ideas for future meetings, discuss the importance of building a coaching culture, and meet others interested in coaching.  

The Mission of CCN is:

  1. To bring together managers and staff who have an interest in developing their coaching skills to support one another.

Following a nationwide search, the Staff Ombuds Office is delighted to announce the selection of Rachel Nicholson as Assistant Ombudsperson for the Staff Ombuds Office.  

January 17, 2019

The Staff Ombuds Office is pleased to announce the appointment of Júlia Horváth as Associate Ombudsperson.  Júlia was appointed to this position after successfully serving as Assistant Ombudsperson from 2016 - 2017 and as Interim Associate Ombudsperson in 2018.  During this time, Júlia helped hundreds of employees successfully navigate workplace disputes and problems.

Last week the Staff Ombuds Office released its 2016-2018 Biennial Report.  Based on aggregate, non-identifiable data from 452 employees who used Ombuds services, the report provides information and analysis about the primary workplace concerns of employees as well as new systemic recommendations for the campus to consider.

October 12, 2018

October 11, 2018 marked the first ever national Ombuds Day, an honor bestowed by  the American Bar Association Dispute Resolution Section.  In recognition of this event, the Berkeley News posed questions to Staff Ombudsperson Sara Thacker and Ombudsperson for Students and Postdoctoral Appointees Marcia Riley regarding insight into their work as ombuds.  Click here for the full article and more information about national Ombuds Day.

Last week, the Staff Ombuds Office released its 2014-2016 Biennial Report that provides the campus community with information regarding its caseload and systemic issues identified during this two year period.

Berkeley made history by becoming the first university in the UC system to adopt a policy to prevent workplace bullying. This policy was drafted by a working group of Central Human Resources’ Policy and Practice Unit and approved by the Office of the Chancellor’s Compliance and Enterprise Risk Committee May 18th.

Otherwise known as a “supergraph,” this new graphic chart illustrates usage of the office by Berkeley staff and the top issues of concern. The information is based on aggregate, non-identifiable data from employees who used ombuds services during this time period.
